Indelible ink usage

AP Africa Indelible ink (also called permanent ink or electoral ink) is a special type of ink designed to be extremely difficult or impossible to remove from skin or other surfaces for a prolonged period (usually several days to weeks). It is most famously used in elections in many countries, but it also has other practical applications. Here are the main benefits of using indelible ink:

 

1. Prevents Duplicate Voting (Election Integrity)

• The primary and most widespread use is in democratic elections.
• Once applied (usually on a fingernail or finger), it cannot be washed off easily for days or weeks.
• This visibly marks voters and effectively prevents someone from voting more than once in the same election.

 

2. Highly Tamper-Resistant

• Contains silver nitrate (or similar compounds) that reacts with skin proteins and penetrates deeply.
• Resistant to common removal attempts: soap, detergents, bleach, alcohol, solvents, scraping, or even some acids.
• Only fades naturally over time as skin cells renew (typically a few days to four weeks, sometimes longer).

4. Immediate Visual Verification

• Election officials (or security personnel) can instantly see if someone has already voted or entered a restricted area.
• Works well with databases, biometric scanners, or ID checks in low-resource settings.
• Easy identification

 

5. Non-Toxic and Safe (in proper concentrations)

• Modern formulations (e.g., silver nitrate 10–25%) are generally safe for skin application.
• Causes temporary dark purple/black staining but no serious harm in most people.
• No known side effects, in fact can be healthy when used correctly,  WHO and UN approved

 

6. Other Practical Uses Beyond Elections

• Marking attendees at events, clubs, or concerts (to prevent re-entry without paying again).
• Feeding Programs - mark people who have recieved aid or food,  prevent duplicate feeding.
• Innoculation programs - mark people of livestock who have received innoculations.
